The purpose of this standard, developed by the International Institute for Ammonia Refrigeration (IIAR) is to create a uniform system for identification of ammonia refrigeration piping and system components.
Pipe Markers The pipe marker should have five sections:
1. Ammonia System Identification:
Wording "AMMONIA" in black letters on a yellow background
2. Physical State:
The physical state of the refrigerant located to the left of "AMMONIA": a. If Liquid - Wording "LIQ" - in black or white letters on an orange background b. If Vapor - Wording "VAP" - in black or white letters on a sky blue background c. If Both - Wording "LIQ" "VAP" - both printed in the colors designated above
3. Pressure Rating:
The pressure level of the refrigerant located to the right of "AMMONIA": a. If High Pressure - Wording "HIGH" - in black or white letters on a red background b. If Low Pressure - Wording "LOW" - in black or white letters on a green background
To indicate ammonia refrigerant flow direction, directional arrows are illustrated on the pipe marker. 2 of Seton’s 3 ammonia pipe marking options, Setmark® and Ultra-Mark® ammonia pipe markers, come with directional arrows on the marker. The Opti-Code™ version does not include arrows, thus making Seton’s Arrows-On-A-Roll tape a great accessory.
