• Seton Helps Local Safe Haven

Amistad HouseAt the end of an icy February, Seton employees initiated what began as a simple food drive for a local charity, the Amistad House. Upon learning about how much the Amistad House supports needy families in New Haven, Connecticut and how little help they actually receive, Seton was inspired to give even more.

“The Only Solution is Love” is the motto of New Haven’s Amistad Catholic Worker House. Amidst one of the most impoverished neighborhoods in the city, the Amistad House works to be a safe haven for people of all races, ethnicities, religions and backgrounds.

Run by Mark and Luz Colville, the Amistad House aims to blur the lines between those in need and those who volunteer. The husband and wife pair lives in the house with their four children and as many people in need who can fit inside. They offer emotional and spiritual support to the downtrodden along with a place to stay, hot meals and anything else they are capable of giving.

Seton’s employees were inspired by the Colville’s generosity and joined together to donate 230 pound of food to the home, along with a financial donation. In addition to food, Seton employees also donated clothes, baby items, and carpeting to accommodate the Amistad’s growing needs.

Roughly 70 of New Haven’s most underprivileged citizens show up at the house every day for breakfast and lunch, waiting in line for meals. Seton’s donation of food will go towards these meals and the other items will be given out to the people receiving aid from the house.

The ten Seton employees who helped deliver the donations also brought with them a hearty dinner to help feed the residents of the Amistad House, and even stayed to install much needed shelving in the home’s kitchen.

The Colvilles were extremely grateful for the generosity and support Seton showed them. As a smaller organization in the area, they lack the large donors that other charities often rely on.
