Precautionary Measures: How to Safely Reopen Your Bar or Restaurant During/After COVID-19

Restaurant Entrance Points & Waiting Areas:
-Reduce the number of diners allowed into your restaurant at one time. Control the flow of traffic into your restaurant by ensuring that maximum capacity plans are enforced at the front door.

-Frequently clean push bars and handles on any doors that do not open automatically.

-Place appropriate signage and other messaging on site, including at entrances and in other locations that can be easily seen by customers.

-Encourage diners to wear face-covering masks whenever they are not seated/eating, and require restaurant employees to wear them at all times. Post the appropriate signage to enforce this rule upfront and set expectations.

Mark designated pick up areas for customers picking up takeout orders to limit customers in the building. Enforce social distancing with floor markers when customers are waiting in line to be cashed out or to pick up their orders.

Front of House Dining Areas:
-Post clearly visible social distancing signage to direct customers throughout your building. Mark 6 feet spacing lines on the floor with floor markers or floor marking tape in high traffic areas.

-To reduce the spread of germs, consider switching to disposable, single-use menus.

-Temporarily eliminate any buffets, salad bars, or self-service food stations.

-Provide alcohol-based hand sanitizers so workers and guests can frequently sanitize their hands. Hand washing is especially encouraged after blowing one’s nose, coughing, or sneezing.

-Post notices to avoid sharing food or beverages.

Back of House Dining Areas:
-When possible, redesign kitchen work areas to allow for proper social distancing. Floor mats or social distancing floor markers are ideal for creating visual indicators.

-As always, employees should wash hands thoroughly before preparing food.

The US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has also released a set of best practices for businesses in the food & beverage industry that are reopening after closures due to COVID-19. Individuals that are involved in the implementation of Coronavirus safety procedures within their facilities should be sure to review these, along with the Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) recommendations. The CDC recommends that all businesses, regardless of industry, identify a workplace coordinator who is responsible for COVID-19 issues and preventive activities.
